Today in our movies section we come with locations from ‘When a man loves a woman’.

This 1994 film is cast as a romantic drama with starring actors, Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia at the helm.

Let me remind you briefly the story. The movie stars Meg Ryan as Alice, a San Francisco junior high school counselor who drinks all day, every day. Her husband, Michael, an airline pilot played by Andy Garcia, knows she gets loaded on occasion, but has no idea of the extent of her drinking.

I have a special affection for this film, as I’ve always liked it. But not because I felt identified with the characters or the story, but because as the title says this man worshiped his wife. That unconditional love that transmits the character of Andy Garcia to his family but especially his wife and the love of two small daughters to his mother.

The soundtrack is fantastic! In fact, I bought the CD many years ago. It has songs like ‘When a man loves a woman’ by Percy Sledge or ‘Everybody Hurts’ by REM.

Who was going to tell me that someday I would live in the same neighborhood where this movie was filmed…

Just 200 meters away, I have this coquettish Victorian house where one day, more than 20 years ago, its main cast shot one of my favorite films. The address is 1521 Masonic Avenue.

I never get tired of passing by and admiring it. I always think to myself that if I’d see the owner would ask if he lived here by then and would love if he told me some anecdotes. Unfortunately, I never see anyone except one afternoon I saw a band rehearsing, nothing interesting I can say.

But not all the movie was filmed here: the scenes of the trip to Mexico were shot in Cancun, at the boutique hotel The house that sings in Zihuatanejo and the indoor scenes in Los Angeles.

Other scenes from the movie where you can see San Francisco is the opening scene with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

The famous scene from the beginning where a man is trying to hook up with Alice when Michael arrives is at the bar “The Buena Vista” located at 2810 Hyde St. As the plaque on the outer wall of the bar indicates, this is America’s first Irish coffee, opened in 1952. Here are two reasons to visit this place.

Here my favorite speech of the movie:

“My wife is an alcoholic. Best person I ever met. She has 600 different smiles. They can light up your life. They can make you laugh out loud, just like that. They can even make you cry, just like that. That’s just with her smiles. You’d have to see her with her kids. You’d have to see how they look at her, when she’s not looking. To think of all the things she lives through, and I couldn’t help her.”
